Travis, Have you thought of replacing the stock alt. with a later internally regulated one?  There is a great article in the tech guide on how to do it.  Just ask for a '78 nova w/ac alt. and I believe you'll get a 63 amp one.  It's easy, looks stock, and only requires a smidge of rewiring. 

I've done both of my cars.  I won't use anything else.
