Having only sold my Sandcar with that combo...2 years ago...


The early  VW / Hewland / Porsche  didn't use the  nosecone...there's a bushing in the transaxle to support the shaft.


It was cut off and the "adapter"  set screwed onto the rest of the endpiece...


And yes.. there is a VW  starter [ for the auto-stick / full auto trans]  that did have a nosecone..


This adapter would space the drive gear  back an inch or more..
