Jay:  Is the area around the plugs free of flash?  I found on my 69 heads that the hottest area is there, and that area was completely plugged with flashing.  I took off tons of excess aluminum which made a huge difference.
 
One point of interest was that as the molds for the aluminum heads got older (conversely the car was of a newer vintage), they wore somewhat, resulting in more flashing being left after the manufacturing process.
 
Obviously Chevy didn't bother removing the flash before assembling the engines, a problem we owners ended up getting stuck with.
