<VV> generator - HELP!!!!!

I was helping my friend Harry get his '64 monza coupe going.  It has a 102/4spd in it.  He wanted to stay with a generator set-up.  He had the original '64 generator rebuilt.  I am an alternator kind of guy.  All my Corvairs have been switched to the internally regulated alts to do away with the voltage regulator.  

   Because of this, I am a little weak when it comes to generators.  So....................guess what Harry and I forgot to do?  Right.  Neither one of us remembered to polarize the generator before we tried to start the car.  We got a not-so-subtle clue when the gen light glowed brightly after the initial start and subsequent running of the engine. 

   My question is this: What have we done to the generator and voltage regulator and what must be done to fix our screw-up?
