<VV> what year did reverse lights become mandatory?

What year did reverse lights become mandatory on passenger cars?  I know
they were not standard on some early Corvairs, and I've heard mention of a
delete option as well.  What year Corvairs were available without reverse
lamps?  Anyone have a picture to show me of ORIGINAL Corvairs without
reverse lamps?
