Bruce,
Here's how I install the distributor with ignitor  when it's been removed and the engine worked on:

1.    turn the pulley until the timing mark is on tdc (zero) degrees on the scale.

2.   remove the cap from the distributor, and hold it above it while "eyeballing" the location of the  #1 post o n the cap.

3.   put a little chalk mark at that position on the distributor housing.

4.    align the rotor with the chalk mark.

5.    eyeball the position of the distributor shaft versus  the  oil pump slot position so that when you install the distributor, it will slide right in.  If

neccessary, you can tweak the oil pump slot with a screw driver.

6.   after making sure the rotor is pointng to #1 post on the cap, loosely install the distributor and clamp making sure you can still turn the

      distibutor fairly easily.

7.    you have now effectively installed the distributor at "tdc"

8.    now turn the distributor "clockwise"  just a smidge.  You're trying to put it close to 14* btdc.

9.   you can now try to start the engine.  If it tries to fire, then you're in the ballpark.  keep going.

10. if it doesn't try to start and just cranks, you have the distributor in 180* out.

11. if this is the case,  rotate the crank pulley one revolution.  it should be pointing to #2 on the cap. (1-4-5- 2 -3-6)

12. repeat steps one thru eight and viole, it will fire.  Or at least it always did for me. ( :

Hope this helps
