<VV> Speedo question

Hi all.  The speedo on my new 66 Monza doesn't work.  Pulled the cable from the 
dash and it turns freely.  Put a vice grip on that end and pulled the cable from 
the left front wheel.  Cable looks ok, is flattened into a square at the end.  
When I turned it from that end, I could hear the vice grip turning inside the 
car, so the cable isn't severed.

Has anyone  had this problem before?  Possible problem with the spindle, or 
maybe the wheel end of the cable is just worn?

 Not the spindle!!   The wheel bearing dust cover has a sqaure tube that the cable is driven by..
