<VV> Is the Volt the new Corvair?

Here was my online contribution:

This grossly misinformed journalist asks the question "Is the Chevy Volt the New Corvair?" Well I suppose if GM is successful in selling 1,835,170 Volts, as it did Corvairs, then I guess the answer would be "yes", making the Volt into the tremendous success that the Corvair was. Unfortunately any such comparison would be spurious, since the car buying public didn't need $12,500 in government subsidies per vehicle to make the Corvair attractive as apparently  it does with the Volt. The Corvair was attractive to the sophisticated car buyer of the day based on its own intrinsic merits,  as it was the ONLY North American manufactured car of its day to offer four wheel fully independent suspension, rear wheel drive, air cooled engines, aluminum engine blocks, turbocharging along with a host of other innovations. Given the unjustified thrashing that GM took over the Corvair by Rakph Nader and a  litany of misinformed journalists (a species that still exists
today), the corporation retreated into an era of non-innovation and followed the path most followed, as opposed to the path least followed. And look where that strategy eventually took the once innovative General Motors.....straight into bankruptcy. Rather than maligning innovation, those in the media should celebrate innovations like the Corvair and the Volt. I for one am pleased to see that GM got its game back. Mind you, It only took over half a century (1965-2010) for GM to overcome the trepidation it suffered from and the culture of "innovation is bad" from the hatchet job done on GM's engineering reputation by Ralph Nader, a person who admitted he had never driven a Corvair. I suspect the same is probably true of the grossly misinformed journalist who wrote this piece?

You can leave a comment.  I've left a few as has Deck, Craig and a few
others.  He will never slander Corvairs again!
