OK... For sure, it could've happened that way. And it probably did. But given that a given crankcase assembly minus cylinders could still go to any of a number of engines, well, I was making the assumption they were stamped when it was all over.
I'll go with your explanation!

NO. The engine suffix code was a sort of build sheet that told the assembly crew how to configure the engine and which parts were to be installed. So the code had to be stamped at the start of assembly.
