Lots going on there - but I think the hard starting was likely the result of 
too much advance.  You MIGHT have gotten it started by retarding the 
distributor and saved the cost of the tow.

I set the clamp on the distributor tight enough to hold it in place - but 
not so tight that I can't bump it in order to move it a degree or two when 
desired.
