I bought a '63 one time that had fuel problems and was towing it home with a chain and the tow vehicle died.  Everything was good on the '63 except it wasn't getting fuel.  I was in it and had it in gear to put some load on the chain and it had primed it's self and started running.  I didn't realize it until the tow vehicle quit.  I drove the Corvair the rest of the way home.
If you have to tow a vehicle with a chain and you have some time to do a little planning,  an old tire in the middle to give it some stretch helps a lot.
