You can (and it's not an operation that can use the word "just") but running the tranny backwards is not good for the tranny. Reversing the engine is the better way to go, it cares a LOT less.

I have a friend who will be adding a Corvair motor into a VW based vehicle.
In order to reverse rotate the motor, he will need a cam (about a 280
degree Isky would be good) plus the distributor and crank gears. Anybody
have
the parts? I know Clark's Corvair still lists the items, and I am passing
along that info.
