Doesn't seem to be a lot of complaints about swing axles when they are 
on the very period competitive 356 & 550 Porsche (and variations), or 
the Mercedes Gullwing cars ...

I will readily admit to converting my early Corvairs to 64 suspension 
design though, including front suspension modifications.
