Stephen, It is indeed very attatched to the housing. On my '69 I was able to (gently) wedge a small screwdriver and remove this gasket in 1 piece which is how you want it to come off. If not remove your alternator then the adapter plate and work on it on the table. I assume this gasket was not replaced when you made this a new engine?
