Earlies, NO grease fitting. You have to pull the axle out anyway,
so go ahead and split the bearing shells and clean/repack
them. Easier and less time than drilling/tapping/installing a zerk fitting.

Really.

Lates, drill/tap/install a grease fitting. But:

Before you install the zerk fitting... Clean the bearing out
thoroughly first, shoot it full of brake-klene and blow air through
the freshly drilled hole to remove whatever you can get to come
out. Just let it blow out past the seals. Repeat until satisfied.

Then pump it full of grease. FULL. Waste some. Rotate the axle
hub/bearing a few turns.

Then, blow THAT out with air until you can't blow out any more
grease. Clean up the mess. Reassemble, go on down the road.

I've done this, quiet bearings, no grease on the shoes... enough
grease stays on the bearings after the blow-out to keep them happy.

tony..
