EDM - Electrical Discharge Machining. That what they use to take out taps.
At least that is what they use when the parent piece of material is worth
more than the labor charge. <grin>

Once upon a time, right out of high school, I was a gopher for a T&D
shop,
and there was a another local shop that did this work. Of course this was
in the northern Detroit suburbs, and there were lots of T&D shops doing
things for the Big Three. Don't remember what process is called, but it'll
burn out a harden tap.
