We left Indy at around four AM this morning. I am a bit weary from all the fun plus I have a ton of photos to edit down to 30 or so.
If you have never done one of these events you are missing out on a lot of fun. Brian and the crew put in a lot of time and effort to pull these events off.
They are already planning the next one.
The rain held off for the first two days of events but was coming down hard on the drive out to the autocross. As Tom related the first runs were wet but it dried up and the rest were fast.
Backing up to the Time Trial, I was again reminded what an absolutely beautiful facility Putnam Park Road Course is. It looks like a high dollar Kentucky horse farm with the same kind of white fencing. The grounds are well manicured and trimmed. The racing surface is in great shape and there is a ton of run off room. We were able to run open headers also.
Top three in the timed runs were Michael LeVeque with a best time of 01:25.61. Second fastest was Dave Edsinger with a 01:26.06 and dragging along behind was me with a 01:30.06. To put this in perspective Ron Fellows does this course in about 75 seconds in a C5-R Vette! Thats with the loop in the middle of the straight too!
We used the 10 turn long course of 1.77 miles which to me seems longer than it is.
I still haven't learned all the turns but, I was on my Tojo RA-1 vintage 13" tires. My car ran great but my alternator was not working so I had to keep the charger on the battery.
I'll let the others tell thier tales of daring do.
As for the drag racing part, I have never done it on a strip nor run any bracket races. I was terrible at it and got whipped every time. I just could not get out of the hole with my tall first gear and I was not going to abuse the car trying to improve my reaction times.
I was able to get up to 92+ MPH in the 1/4 mile speeds. It was fun and now I can add the old and famous Muncie Drag Strip to my list of tracks I've run on.
Getting back to the autocross, I told myself if it was raining when we got there the car was staying on the trailer. Plus I was just tired of the load/unload procedure so, I took photos. It was fun watching everybody run. Dave Edsinger again whipped all comers including the LeVeque jugernaught which included Dave Clemens driving Michael LeveQue's yellow light weight car. Paul Fox in his FlexiFlyer may have had a shot but I believe he had some mechanical issues. He can chime in here.
I will work on getting the photos posted this week and will alert you here as usual.
