The cross shaft isn't the only piece that has to turn -- there's a
couple pulley wheels up front, and one of them disintegrating can cause
cable troubles, but probably "in the back" -- however, I suppose it is
possible the noise was already there, and ,since the linkage got sticky,
you are listening more closely. Even the pedal itself can get sticky if
the bushings or lube go bad.
And, of course there are a number of other things that would require
drivetrain removal for a specific diagnosis, so I'd suggest making sure
it isn't the cable or a pulley or something else, and, if the trouble
persists, then pull the drivetrain for a better look inside the bell
housing (or, maybe one of those remote camera gizmos on a wand).
If the clutch isn't slipping, learn how to drive it without the clutch,
and continue to drive, maybe not too far from home though.
