GM put the harmonic balancers on the PG versions of the higher horsepower  
engines for the same reasons they put them on the manual transmissions.   
I've heard your point before, and I'm sure someone else can provide the  
engineering info, but a torque converter doesn't do the job a harmonic balancer  
does.  Your engines your cars, but I'll stick to my harmonic balancers (and  
when I can't afford rebuilt I'll go to my stash of used ones).
