a plugged oil filter should not take out a motor , bypass valves take
care of it , but add extra strain on the pump.you can see evidence on the
distributor gear of extra wear.
i checked a clark's filter i removed to change a damper today , and that
retainer is a slightly different design than the one that moved. so the one
that moved MAY be a 1038 NAPA...but not positive. i had a few given to me
over the years. the clarks unit has a slight curl to the edge by the inner
gasket for better retention , the one that failed was a straight edge.
i will check my stock tomorrow.
a leak due to double gasket that goes unnoticed is a time bomb that will
surely ruin a motor in a hurry , and make a mess.
i would say that this type of fault has to be rare. most people would
never spin a corvair filter installing it anyways, just the bolt.

That is pretty darn scary in the sense it can take an engine out. I wonder
if they have any plans of recalling these filters as I have been hearing
more of them failing. I for one have purchased some of these filters and
actually have them on my wagon at this time.
