Joe, I will go along with the plugged filter as well especially since you
mentioned it has 3 or 4 years on it.  But, don't overlook the electrical
connections.  If your ground wire or strap has come loose, or if the
positive lead is not making good connection the fuel pump motor could get
real hot after a while and cause the pump to work less efficiently.
