<VV> NAPA wipers break windshield (NO CORVAIR)

Hello all,

     First off, BEWARE universal wipers on modern cars!

     We just closed the hood on my (84 year old) father's 2001 Cadillac
Eldorado and heard the windshield crack an instant later.  I immediately
looked to see what had happened and discovered that the VERY large "adapter"
portion of the universal windshield wiper on the passenger side had been big
enough to catch the edge of the hood as it came down, get mashed against the
windshield, and break it pretty badly.

     One of our two local NAPA stores sold these blades to my father and
even installed them for him just a week or so ago, any advice on how to
proceed?
