Yes, it needs to be in gear, otherwise the wheel will never spin!

Please erase neutral from my statement and replace it with gear.

I've used the get it going, depress clutch, brake and (if you can gas)
pedals method succesfully but never in neutral. I think that defeats the
purpose.
