Actually, Clark's (and probably other vendors also) sells a special tool which
fits onto a 1/2" ratchet or extension and sort of wedges into the teeth of the
side retainers ring and provides for a fairly smooth removal. The holding jig on
the workbench is undoubtedly a good idea as in order to get enough purchase to
turn the retainer ring you may need some extra muscle via a breaker bar.
