There were reports of the early cars shifting out of gear with engine movement, especially among those folks that drove Corvairs in competition -- FC's too, and likewise there were several attempts by the  factory to stabilize the fore-aft movement of the engine. On the FC, I believe Clarks sells the big black rubber engine bumper thingys that were supposed to keep the engine from bumping forward (There was also a rigid mounted screw device used before the bumpers.)

In the LM, they just tied the shifter to the trans bracket, and slotted the holes in the floor to let the shifter head slide back and forth with the engine, rather than inadvertently shifting gears for you. I don't know if the late FC shifter is similar (the straight line thru the gas tank model).

At least that is the general idea, brought to you by the same guys that put that cardboard tube inside the shifter.  heh, heh, heh ...
