Today, we have cars where very few are driven on a daily basis. The
engines last longer if they are regularily used. So, in ideal
situations, you can expect to get well over 100K miles, some even get
upwards of 200K miles, on a rebuild, if it is done to new specs and if
you take care of the engine. It requires clean oil, and oil that can
stand the higher temperatures the engine runs at. If you have read
Richard Widman's oil articles you will know that oil of proper
viscosity is necessary to provide the correct boundary layer in the
bearings, which prevents wear. The right oil also can provide the
correct film on the cylinder walls to promote sealing and less wear.
It is imperative that the engine run at its design temperature,
meaning that the seals and shrouds all fit properly and the
thermostats are in good working order and adjusted properly. The carbs
cannot be diluting the oil with too much fuel, and ignition needs to
be right.
We all know that cars that sit deteriorate. Drive your cars
regularily, use the right oil, keep it tuned. Enjoy!
