<VV> Anybody use one of these in a corvair? (picture link attached)

I'm working on an 80's vintage Renault UN1 transaxle for a restoration project that I HAVE to get done so I can work on my corvair.  When I pulled this apart I noticed its a pretty beefy unit for how compact and light it is.  Anybody know if this has ever been used in a corvair project?  I think it would be a good match for a rear mounted V6 or V8, but maybe its overkill.
