Generally true but not especially relevant to Corvair or to any older
vehicles.
It's absolutely true that oil companies and maintenance shops would
prefer that you change more often, but it's equally true that car
companies and the govt would rather have you buying new vehicles than
keeping your old vehicles on the road forever. And govt vehicle studies
that refer to outlier data based on really "old" vehicles are referring
to anything older than 1995...50s, 60s, 70s, 80s vintage needs aren't
even on their radar. It's also true that car companies wouldn't be
telling you to do anything that would cost them warranty dollars, but
warranties are based on a life of 100Kmiles or less; I'm interested in
drivetrain life of 300Kmiles despite "spirited" driving...different
constraints.
For my wife's new Jeep, I try to change it between 4K - 5K miles
(service interval is 6K). For my 50s thru 80s vintage stuff, I go with
3K+ but also depending on oil used and how long the vehicle has been
sitting.
I notice there's no mention in the article about the variability in
change intervals between dino and synthetics...
