<VV> Another Corvair "slam"!

The Corvair did change the car world is some pretty negative ways.  The
worst is that it discouraged car makers from doing anything innovative
and began GM's slide into mediocrity.

On the plus side, though, I'm a contrarian and like the car because it's
so often maligned.

London's Design Museum is the world's leading museum devoted to  
contemporary design in every form from furniture to graphics and
architecture to  
industrial design. Their mission is to celebrate, entertain and inform.
And in  
doing so, have produced three books pertaining to fifty icons in dress, 
shoes  and chair design that have changed the world. So when we saw
their 
recently  published Fifty Cars That Changed The World, we scratched our
heads  
wondering which cars they would choose and why?
To Celebrate, Entertain and Inform, that is the Question?

To start with, the book's cover is not very appealing with it's mustard

yellow jacket and simplistic lettering, so it would do best on a shelf
rather  
than your coffee table. But it does have a 1961 Jaguar E-type on the
cover 
so  we'll give it a few marks for that. 
You won't find any preface, acknowledgments or authors name anywhere in
the 
 book. There is an introduction from the Design Museum's Director, Deyan

Sudjic,  but it doesn't really tell you much about the book or how the
fifty 
cars - which  range from a 1908 Ford Model T to a 1998 Smart Car - were 
chosen as icons in  design history.  
Of the 112 pages in the book, 100 are devoted to the fifty cars, each 
getting  two pages. One page has a brief history of the car and it's
contribution 
to the  world, good or bad, and the second page shows one or sometimes
two 
pictures of  the candidate. 
Once we were a few pages into the book, we really liked the simplistic
and  
to the point approach. In fact, the brevity of three or four paragraphs

per car made it a very entertaining and informative read.

The Fifty Cars

We would challenge that even the most knowledgeable car enthusiast would

not  have heard of all fifty cars presented or their historic
significance. 
For  example, does the 1925 Salmson San Sebastian, 1948 Piaggio Ape,
1967 NSU 
RO 80  or 1978 Lancia Megagamma sound familiar? Or did you know that the

Fiat 600 is  what literally got Italy moving again after WWII? 
This is not your typical automotive reading material because many of the

stories you'll find in the Fifty Cars That Changed The World won't be
about 
really great cars with an impressive legacy. Instead it explores the  
success and failures of some of the most brilliant automotive innovators
and how  
the events affected automotive design, public transportation and in some

cases,  the rise and fall of entire countries. You'll get the good like
the 
1947 Ferrari  125S, 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic and Ford GT40, and
then the 
bad like the  1933 Dymaxion, 1954 Panhard Dyna and 1965 Chevrolet
Corvair. 
The ugly award  definitely goes to the Fiat Multipla. 
There's a lot of information in this relatively small and simply
produced  
book, and it sells for under twenty  dollars.
