I would like to thank everyone for their advice on my engine running problems that have been ongoing for a while now.
I had disassembled both carbs, put in new accelerator pumps, new airhorn gaskets, new spacers with sandwiched gaskets, and I cleaned out all the passages as best I could with carburetor cleaner.
I still had problems until I performed the "put your hand over the throat and rev the engine" trick, which seems to have helped a lot. The engine now runs smoothly and virtually all the hesitation is gone. I am guessing there was probably some sort of blockage of fuel somewhere inside the guts of the left carburetor.
There's good vacuum over each carb, and engine vacuum is a steady 12-15 inches, which is good!
A couple of interesting things:
The diagram for placing the fuel filter in its housing isn't clear. But it looks like the filter goes in with the hollow and the cone facing the fuel line, that is, outward, with the flat end inside the carb.
I attempted to connect my Pertronix Ignitor I. I thought I'd try to hook up the black wire to the (-) side of the coil, and the red wire to the (+) side of the coil.
When I turned the starter, the yellow wire from the starter to the coil (which works with the resistor wire to deliver positive voltage to the coil) smoked, melted, and disintegrated up to the connector in the engine room (but no further). I put the old points assembly back and replaced the wire, and everything worked ok.
I don't know if I fried the Ignitor or not, but I'm not going to try to connect the red wire back to the coil. I'll find a 12V source and connect it that way.
I've ordered a pair of rebuilt carbs from Grant Young. Also got a new set of whitewalls for the car, the tires on the car were 10 years old and the rubber was badly rotted.
Thanks again everyone, you guys are the greatest!...Bill Hershkowitz 66 Monza Sport Sedan 110 PG A/C
