<VV> regulator messing up

One of my restoration projects is a 1942 Sperry searchlight, complete with a Hercules 6 cylinder engine and generator.
My motto, if it ain't broke, it will be at the worst possible moment! Especially on something that old, where untold numbers of others have monkeyed with it over the decades, most not well qualified to do so. I spent untold hours reversing several 'improvements', some of which are hysterical to those who understand how an 800,000,000 candlepower searchlight operates! I'm surprised the thing didn't melt down before we got it.
So, yes, on these 40+ year old cars, don't assume anything is bulletproof reliable! It takes a LOT of diligence to make sure everything is working as well as it did when it was new.
