<Well, maybe Porsche had a problem with their center cylinders on their
development 6 cylinder engines, but the 911 came out in '63. First US
models
were delivered in '65, the last year of their 356.>

Here's what Wikipedia has to say on the matter:

<The new car [i.e. the Porsche 911] made its public debut at the 1963
_Frankfurt Motor Show_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurt_Motor_Show)
(_German_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language) : Internationale
Automobil-Ausstellung). The car presented at the auto show had a
non-operational mockup of the 901 engine, receiving a working one in February 1964.>

In any case, I think we can safely say that when the Corvair was introduced
on October 2, 1959 its flat six engine was NOT "Porsche-inspired" and that
when the 1963 Corvair (the subject of the Mecum auction in question) was
introduced in the fall of 1962 Porsche was still not producing a car with a
flat six engine.
