I used to do that.  Then I bought Battery Tenders for every vehicle.  
Life became good.  Batteries last a long time and get through the long 
winters well and the hot summers well.

Note:  I am a fan of the specific "Battery Tender" brand.  I had two 
from other sources and they just did not seem to work as well.
