I really thought the new Camaro would be there, with its "Joker-esque" grinning grille, that looks
like it belongs in a Batman movie (did the Joker have a car ? If so, this is perfect for the role !)
The cars that really belong on the "ugly list" should be the ones that were supposed to have been
"styled" for some aesthetic appeal.
Some of those ugly ones were not designed for curb or eye appeal, but to appeal to the wallet at the
cost of pleasing appearances.
Corvair on the other hand, was designed for the wallet, but has better eye-appeal that most cars
that were designed to their looks (and was discontinued to fit GM's wallet?)
Didn't the late model Corvair win an award for "most Beautiful Car" ? I remember seeing a GM/Chevy
magazine ad depicting the rear quarter panel, vertically as "sculpture" in the ad, possibly in 1967
?
So, to re-cap :
There are ...
1. ugly cars that were NOT designed to be good looking.
2. ugly cars that WERE designed to be good looking.
3. good looking cars that were DESIGNED to be good looking.
... and then there is the Corvair :
4. good looking cars that were not designed to be good looking, but are.
This last category is true for early and late Corvairs, for totally different reasons.
I won't go into my reasoning, since that will start another rivalry ~ let's just be glad all of
"our" cars are in that last, best category, to be filed under the "law of unintended consequences" ?
