FWIW, I greatly prefer to use starting fluid for this sort of analysis - if the engine is going to fire, it will do so on ether.  If it doesn't fire, you know to look elsewhere.  Yes, using too much for too long is bad for the engine, but so is pouring gas into the cylinders.
