I would guess the best way would be to start with a set of three speed gears
nd cluster and change only one gear. I don't recall if reverse gear is in
he same place (as a 4-spd) but I think it is. Howaever, you could chooose
hatever gears you want in pairs, of course, to get the ratios you would
ike.
Can it be done? Yes, I think so.

But, I think you could somehow change the 3rd gears, both the one on the cluster and the one on the upper/main shaft, you could exceed 1 to 1.
I think it has been done, not necessarily inside a Corvair trans. In the Corvair, you would shift 1st/2nd/4th the 3rd for overdrive. Fun??
It would definitely be an acquired taste to drive. On an external shifted trans, you could invert the shift lever to put the gears in the right place.
