Thanks for the answer to the implied question - taper the cut end first :-) I guess at that point it doesn't matter which end goes up, I'll probably put the 'factory' end on the bottom.
As for 'taking it in for alignment', stay tuned for the post on the DIY alignment rack and tools :-)
