<VV> super magnets attached to the oil filter

Shouldn't the filtering properties of the filter remove the metal particles?
I understand how transmission filters could let stuff by that a magnet could
later catch, but oil filters are packed full of filtering material, and I
change mine often.  Should metal fragments be able to get to the edges of a
high quality oil filter through all of the other stuff they would have to
get through?
