When I was a mechanic in the mid 70s, I changed a lot of aluminum/nylon
gears on V8s, but never remember seeing on in a Corvair.

 Same here. Never saw anything but an all aluminum cam gear. Given the
substantially higher oil temps in a Corvair, I suspect that nylon would fail
QUICKLY!
