Maybe Dennis or Mark or whoever makes the call will let one more post from me on
this topic go through, and maybe not. I'm remided of an incident back in the
mid-90's when we were negotiating the purchase of a century-old Queen Anne style
house in the mtns. of Western NC. I had to get some estimates on having it
painted, including the metal roof, as I was wanting the seller to split the
costs with me 50/50. One of the bids was from a nice guy from the local area
there who had a good reputation but who apparently wasn't always the sharpest
one with his estimating. As predicted, he came in considerably lower than the
rest, but I wondered if he perhaps hadn't understood all that the job entailed.
For anyone who may not know, Queen Anne style houses typically have multiple
colors on window and door trim and other "ginger bread" type cornices, etc. I
wanted this guy to paint the house, but I didn't want him to lose his shirt, so
I asked him to come back out and talk to us again. We went over exactly what
would be required and he submitted a new bid; still lower than the others, but
now high enough so he could do a good job and not regret having gotten himself
into it. That's my kind of "capitalism," whether I'm on the buying end or on the
selling.
Remember guys, there is something out there called "The Golden Rule." And no,
that doesn't mean "The One with ALL the Gold Makes the Rules."
BTW, for what it's worth, I had several private emails from frequenters of VV
saying they agreed with my sentiments.
