Actually, the current pressure is closer to 4000 PSI, and there are composite tanks running as high as 5000 PSI. Depending on the depth, and whether or not you have multiple tanks, one can go a lot longer. Especially if the diver has a rebreather!
Sure, if you REALLY work at it, you can break off the valve. But then again, if you REALLY work at it, you can set the gas tank on fire in a car. In other words, nothing's safe, but SCUBA tanks have a very good safety record.
The compressor probably isn't on board. Obviously, it's probably powered from the line.

John, my question is: Where is the compressor? If on-board, what powers it? As to Scuba tanks, the standard is an 80 cu in pumped to 3000PSI. Average diver can stay
down 25 to 60 minutes depending on depth and breathing technique. Not sure about shooting one, but if you break the head off, it becomes a rocket. Usually not a problem
on the dive boat, but has happened in-transit from the pump to the boat.

Richard, the technology exists today. How do you think they fill SCUBA tanks, etc.? And they don't blow up! Even if you shoot one, they don't blow up. Mythbusters had an episode on that... I want their job! LOL

Ken, you are a voice crying in the great 'green anti-fossil fuel' wilderness.
I noticed that no mention was made as to where this compressed air was to be
obtained. My compressor, a two stage 80 gal 220 volt requires a dedicated line.
I guess the creators of this consider the air supply to be in the
'hard part, do later' category. My guess
Is what they really want is a follow-on
Grant for further research.

combustion engines became the norm because the conversion of fuel to energy
takes place within. Electric cars require power to be generated elsewhere then
be transferred from the source to the vehicle and this engine requires
electricity from the source to be transferred to the compressor and transferred
again to the vehicle and yet another transfer from the storage chambers to the
motor. There is a loss at EACH ONE of these transfers because each is less than
100% efficient. Everyone on this list knows the cost of running an air
compressor. And the higher the pressure the greater the cost ... who would want
to be around for the concussion should one of these high pressure air tanks
fail? Even if the wear problem could be over come the loss in efficiency
through all the transfers could not be tolerated. A hydraulic motor would be
superior to the air system. There is nothing free there either.
