<VV> Timing Question

If retarding your timing hurts fuel mileage, as in trying to do it to remedy "pinging",  shouldn't advancing it a few degrees (from 14 to 18) help it, then? 

I advanced the timing on my 110/pg from 14 to 18.  It seemed to make it somewhat snappier.  But my mileage went down.  Is this normal, or just a coincidence?  Thoughts?
