<VV> Diagnose engine "knock" ?

Nope, I parked it because I go a job teaching 40 miles away and I needed a
"normal" car to beat up !
The paint is bad (looks like it was painted with latex flat house paint) and
while there isn't much rust, but ("appearances" being what they are) only a
Corvair nut could appreciate it.
The car was running fine, but needed a LOT of cleaning and fixing up to look
good, so when I talked about my car they couldn't see the rust a crud that
I'm just now scraping off - half the time I spend is scraping dirt and oil
off the engine and shrouds, etc.
The real reason I "retired" her was because I "did my job" rescuing her from
the crusher, despite the fact that she is (A) NOT a convertible, and (B) she
is not a 4-speed.
If she had been either a convert OR a 4-speed (or even a 3-speed - easier to
convert), I'd have started work back then.
I had driven to LA and back several times with not even a thrown fan belt
back then.
When the heater hose sawed through my left rear axle, I realized there was a
lot to do to be a driver, and I just parked her to decorate my driveway,
because I am a Corvair nut appreciated what she could be, if I ever got the
time.
After mechanics (and my lack of modern mechanical knowledge that made me
dependent on them) destroyed my "driver" I decided to work on this one,
despite being a PG hardtop !
BTW, the compression was fine before I started this odyssey, being one of
the first things I checked when I fired her up.
I think (A) gas smell in exhaust + (B) knocking when car is not even warmed
up + (C) zero compression in #3 = bad #3 exhaust valve not closing.
Someone said my "theory" was "even money" but I think it's a "slam dunk" but
we'll see when I pull the head, hopefully today !
Thanks for all the VV insights !
Charlie
