We put 250 miles on the 66 4 door A/C car today, the second half with
the AC on.
The event was a club get-together at a member's river home now with 4
car garage addition. Good food, good weather, great company. There was
even a boat ride on the river, but we had to leave early to meet up
with my daughter Ashley, the Corvair driver, and missed the boat ride.
But, we had our own adventure stopping for fuel in the town of
Tappahannock. The car wouldn't restart, exhibiting dead battery
syndrome. But it started quite rapidly 45 mins earlier when we left the
river. So I started checking for a bad connection on battery terminals,
harness connector near battery, wiggled HRPT- nice and tight and clean
looking. Hmmmm. Grab DVM and check. Battery shows 12.8 V. Wiggle more,
try to start again, just a slight click noise. Battery now reads 9.8 V
on the actual posts!
Wait, now it reads 12.8 V. Turn key, back to 9.8 V with key off.
Disconnect battery terminal, posts read 12.8 V. Touch terminal back to
post without a spark, 9.8 V .
Debbie asks If we need a jump, no, I need a battery. Luckily, Walmart is
right behind the service station. I walk over, buy a battery, install it
and we are on our way. AC blowing cold, charging voltage fine.
Must be an internal open with high temperature. I'm going to try it
again tomorrow and see if it starts the car fine after cooling down....
It will still be defective and I will return it for core charge even if
it starts fine.
Another one from the bizzaro files.
And another reason to carry a few more tools than a credit card and cell
phone....
