You say the bottom bolt was tight ~ what about the top bolt ?

If the top bolt is tight, gravity will hold the bottom together except under 
'starting load'

Does the thrashing happen every time, followed by freewheeling ?

What about after tightening everything ?

Someone else said to check the starter nose which may have been damaged with 
the first thrashing so it's a good place to start.

I think there's an opening in the bell housing where you can check the 
flywheel to see if you're missing anything important around there  ?
