Been there, done that, bought things with less than 2 seconds left (allow 
for propagation through the system ~ OK, I "sniped" them) kind of like 
Nutmeg did with the California election that cost her $47 per vote !!!

Anyway, your method only works if you want to buy it, since creeping up on 
it could win it, which happened to me once.

That's why I asked if you can retract the bid without entering another bid ?

I did a little research on fees for so-called "Free Listings"  too :
