Lots of ideas, but do we have any proven results?
I use moth balls, and while the odor is objectionable to people I can
state without reservation that it works.
I keep my Corvairs in an old stone barn that is lousy with mice. They
get into everything. I find their evidence in boxes, their dead bodies
under shelves, their nesting materials all over the place.
But they have never gotten into the Corvairs, which have pans of moth
balls in their interiors, in their trunk, and in their engine compartments.
I would love to switch to something with a less overpowering smell, but
I know for a fact that the mothballs work. What else is proven to
work? Not "thought to work," proven to work.
Note: Cats need not apply. I once saw the results of a cat peeing on a
car cover, and it wasn't pretty!
