A 1980 Chevette was my first new car purchase. It was well-cared for, and
always dependable as a result. I sold it with 115k miles on it in 1985 for
$2,000 and it still looked like new. I bought a '85 Cavalier Z24 next, and
could have sued GM under the state's Lemon Law from all the electronic dash
failure/replacements. That aside, it never used/burned oil or had any
leave-you-stranded breakdowns, plus had it's original clutch when sold in
'91 with 151k on the clock.

After that I went to the Dark Side and owned a '91 Accord and '97 Acrua
Integra. I quit buying new at that point and bought a '98 Volvo V70 AWD
wagon in '03.

The company decided to cut car expenses and got me a 2008 Dodge Charger
lease after that. At first I hated it (think stripped-down rental car with
smallest-possible V6), but it's based on the Mercedes E platform and turned
out to be a pretty good car. The traction/stability control is remarkably
good for RWD in northern winters. On the negative side, I'll have 3 years in
it as of Jan 2011 and I can hear/feel a transmission or rear axle issue
coming.
