I have had the same problem on both my 65 and my 66.
Both times it was due to one of the springs in the turn signal mechanism getting weak/corroded and losing contact.
What tells the tale is that the signal works, but the brake light does not.
The mechanism in the column is what directs the power to the rear. The filament of the bulb that glows for the brake is also the filament used for the signal.
If it is not the ground, it most certainly is the switch in the column.

Luckily they are available through our vendors.
