Lots of reasons. Wear, on a really modified engine, slippage, etc.

Why would you remove the crank gear?
I've got thier 10 ton unit and it works fine for everything I need. You have to be creative on jigs to hold stuff in the press. I think HF press's come with press plates, but make sure.
